A tiny blue spark when you push in or pull out a plug is usually normal: it's the current making or breaking contact. Other signs mean a fault that can cause a fire.
Warning signs that need an electrician
- The plug point or plug feels warm or hot.
- Brown or black scorch marks, or melted plastic on the plug or the socket.
- A burning or "fishy" smell near a plug point or the distribution board.
- Buzzing or crackling from the socket.
- Sparks that are large, yellow or orange, or that keep happening.
- Lights flicker when something is plugged in at that socket.
What to do straight away
- Switch off and unplug the appliance, but only if you can do it safely without touching anything hot or damaged.
- Switch off that circuit at the distribution board. If you aren't sure which one, switch off the main switch.
- Don't use the socket again until it has been checked.
- If there's smoke or flames, get everyone out and call the fire department. Never put water on an electrical fire.
Common causes
- Loose connections behind the plug point, which heat up over time.
- Overloading: too many appliances on one adaptor or multiplug, especially heaters, kettles and air fryers.
- Worn sockets that no longer grip the plug firmly.
- Damaged appliance plugs or cords.
- Water getting into the socket, for example in a kitchen or outside.
What the electrician will do
A registered electrician will check the wiring and connections, replace the damaged socket, and test the circuit and the earth leakage protection. If several points in your home show signs of heat, ask about the condition of the wiring and the DB board. See DB board upgrades, or if it can't wait, emergency electricians in Benoni.
